The Office vs. Home Office: A Modern Dilemma

The debate surrounding the optimal work environment has resurfaced with renewed vigour with a Chair of a Board recently saying to me that working from home is, ‘simply not working’, and the likes of Amazon and Tabcorp, controversially mandating compulsory office attendance for five days a week. Anecdotally we are hearing more and more companies are contemplating similar mandates. As we emerge from the pandemic-induced era of remote work, organisations and individuals alike grapple with the question: is the office obsolete, or is it essential for fostering innovation, collaboration, and productivity?

In this exploration, we will delve into the compelling arguments for both sides, supported by empirical evidence. We will examine the multifaceted impact of remote work on employee wellbeing, productivity, and company culture.

Survival of the Fittest: How C-suite Roles Are Evolving - The COO

Part Four | The COO

The internal mechanics of the COO role are profoundly evolving. Tentacular supply chains, intensifying digitization and the quest for sustainability are all driving forces. The COO must not only understand them but embrace the opportunities they bring. The stakes have never been higher - and risk has moved center stage.

Key Questions

How has the COO role evolved over the past 10 years?

What are the defining qualities of the fittest COOs For What’s Next?

How are supply chain complexity, digitization and sustainability affecting the operations domain?

What are the evolutionary perspectives for the COO?

The Modern Boardroom: New Characters Needed

The composition of Boards has been changing over time, although some would say that the rate of change has been too slow - especially as we evolve towards Boards that are generally more representative of their business's customer bases and the broader communities in which they operate.

Amrop's Cybersecurity sub-practice is represented in Australia by Jamal Khan, Managing Partner, and Luke Henningsen, Partner, who delved into the topic of the requirements of the modern Boardroom – and the appearance of "new characters" in response to the rapidly growing cybersecurity risks around the world.

Survival of the Fittest: How C-suite Roles Are Evolving - The CFO

Part Three | The CFO

There has been a steady evolution in the CFO role: from ‘bean counter’ to ‘business strategist’. Today’s fittest are guided by wise and purposeful leadership, working with the CEO. But a volatile operating context is setting the CFO at the epicenter of a risk storm, and regulatory and ESG reporting are proving burdensome.

In the finance domain, the CFO role is still by far the most sought-after. Although an accounting background remains the most common, it is not the only track. Looking forward, the CFO will remain a top contender for the CEO role, even if the succession slate is broadening to other CXOs. What will the CFO For What’s Next look like? What factors determine the survival of the fittest?

Geopolitical waves, digitization and AI. The drive for sustainability. Demands for full transparency and the changing needs of talent. These and other forces have dramatically broadened the CEO role. The traditional routes to the top seat are already changing.

This series examines the evolution in C-suite roles and the composition of the optimal leadership team. Based on the insights of senior Amrop Partners from across the world and the Amrop global data set, we examine five roles: the CEO, the CFO, the COO, the CHRO and the CIO.

Following our exploration of the C-suite ecosystem, we now ask: what will the CEO For What’s Next look like? What determines the survival of the fittest?

Survival of the Fittest: How C-suite Roles Are Evolving - Part 1: Ecosystem

Part One | Ecosystem

In 1836 a young naturalist was returning from a five-year expedition aboard the HMS Beagle. As his ship neared the English coastline, Charles Darwin jotted down a big idea: species might not be fixed. Thirteen years later ‘On the Origin of Species’ was published and with it, evolutionary biology arose: a scientific theory that populations evolve through natural selection.

If we consider the corporate world as an ecosystem and each C-suite domain: finance, operations, human resources and technology as a genus, what is happening to the species within those domains? How are C-suite roles evolving, and what does this mean for leadership teams?

In this series we consider the evolution in C-suite roles and the optimal Leadership Team For What’s Next. Based on the insights of senior Amrop partners from around the world and Amrop’s global data set, we examine five roles: the CEO, the CFO, the COO, the CHRO and the CIO.
