A vision that sees the Aerospace & Defense sector in Saudi Arabia on another level – nothing short of a national transformation.
Saudi Arabia has the third largest defense budget in the world – in 2020, 92% of this budget was spent abroad. However, as part of Vision 2030, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, Minister of Defense, has stated that the Aerospace and Defense sector seeks to localize 50% of its spending, fulfilling the core objectives behind Vision 2030: diversifying the Saudi economy and creating jobs.
Localizing the sector and manufacturing internally will attract foreign investments and present the opportunity for global defense contractors and manufacturers to invest in the Saudi market through economic offset programs and setting up joint ventures. This will in-turn allow the local Defense industry sector to enhance local content contribution to the Saudi economy as well as the potential for exports and future creation of R&D capability and create over 40,000 jobs.
To support the execution of this ambitious plan, local defense manufacturers will require the right leaders that are a combination of local Saudi experts with transferable skills from other sectors, as well as international defense experts that have relevant sector experience in setting up similar operations elsewhere.
